Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser - DGSA - Exams & Qualifications

To qualify as a DGSA, individuals must pass written exams to gain certification. The certificate is valid for 5 years. The certificate can be extended upon successful re-examination.

All DGSAs are required to pass the Core and All Classes examinations and at least one of the mode papers:

  • Road
  • Rail
  • Inland Waterway (although the UK is not a signatory of this mode)

DGSA Examinations
The UK Department for Transport have appointed the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) to manage DGSA examinations. SQA manage the whole DGSA exam process: setting dates, organising, holding and marking the exams and issuing the certificates.

The dates for the next DGSA exams are as follows:

2025

  • 6 March 2025
  • 12 June 2025
  • 11 September 2025
  • 20 November 2025

DGSA Training
Neither the Department for Transport nor SQA recommend any particular training course or organisation providing DGSA training. Take a look at the Â鶹ÒùÔº Consultants list, as this some of our members provide training.

The British Association of Dangerous Goods Professionals, Â鶹ÒùÔº, was set up to support DGSAs and other people handling dangerous goods, in all modes of transport. We run events and seminars, produce a Dangerous Goods Newsletter and run a Questions and Answers forum. Our membership is by subscription. For more information or to join us, please see the Join Â鶹ÒùÔº page of this website.

We plan to develop more information and support regarding DGSA Exams, in the Member Only section of this website, at a later date.
